If you’re arranging cremation for a veteran, one question comes up almost immediately: will the VA help cover the cost? The short answer is yes, in most cases — but the amount, the process, and the paperwork depend on a few specific factors. Here’s what actually applies, without the jargon.
The Department of Veterans Affairs does not pay a cremation provider directly. Instead, it reimburses the person who paid for the veteran’s cremation or funeral, through a one-time burial allowance. That means your family still pays the funeral home up front — at All Veterans – All Families Cremations, that’s $1,295, less a $100 veteran credit — and then files a claim for reimbursement afterward.
If the veteran’s death was connected to a service-related injury or condition, the VA burial allowance can run up to $2,000 toward burial and funeral expenses.
For deaths not connected to military service, the allowance is smaller — recent VA guidance puts it at roughly $978 toward burial and funeral costs, plus up to another $978 as a plot or interment allowance if the veteran is buried or inurned outside a VA national cemetery. Some sources round this to a combined figure near $1,900–$2,000; others cite a slightly different combined total closer to $1,000. Because these figures are adjusted periodically, confirm the exact current amount at va.gov or by calling the VA at 1-800-827-1000 before you rely on a number for planning.
If the veteran is laid to rest in a VA national cemetery — including Sarasota National Cemetery — burial, the plot, and a headstone or marker are provided at no cost, along with perpetual care. That removes the plot/interment portion of the equation and leaves cremation itself as the main out-of-pocket cost.
Eligibility generally follows discharge status: veterans discharged under conditions other than dishonorable typically qualify, along with certain dependents in specific circumstances. A recent expansion under the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act also extended full burial allowance eligibility to veterans who left VA medical or nursing care to receive VA-provided hospice at home and passed away between July 1, 2025 and October 1, 2026. Families file VA Form 21P-530EZ (Application for Burial Benefits) to request reimbursement. Claims must generally be filed within two years of the burial or cremation. You’ll need the veteran’s discharge paperwork (DD214), a copy of the death certificate, and proof of the expenses you paid. If the DD214 has been lost, the National Archives can issue a replacement — this is one of the most common hold-ups families run into, so it’s worth starting early.
